GREENFIELD TOWNSHIP – Born Friday, January 24, 1834 to William and Hannah (Moon) Cruit, Richard grew up in Greenfield Township. Both of his parents immigrated from England and relocated to Fairfield County from Virginia after they were married. His father, William, was naturalized in 1842. His parents are buried near him in the Mount Zion United Methodist Church Cemetery located off Route 188. A kick from a horse left him deranged as he battled multiple episodes of severe attacks from typhoid fever. Soon after, he took his own life by shooting himself just twelve days after his 30th birthday. Relatives, friends, and neighbors were distraught at the news and lamented over his death. Throughout Richard’s life, he held a high moral character and exemplified patience and never raged anger toward anyone. Richard’s father, William, would die the same year on August 28.
