BIOGRAPHY

FAIRFIELD COUNTY – Born to Orlando M. and Cornelia Olive (Kistler) Lewis on Tuesday, March 1, 1887, Mary Fay Lewis became the second of two daughters raised by the couple. Both did not call Fairfield County home for long as the family relocated to New Holland, Ohio, located in Perry Township, Pickaway County. However, Mary did attend Carroll High School and graduated there in 1904. She married Clarence Wilbur Coffman, around 1907, who became a well established dentist with his own practice by 1910, in Lewisburg, Ohio, a village located in Harrison Township, Preble County. Sometime within the next decade he moved his family and office to New Holland, a village located in Perry Township, Pickaway County. By 1930, the family relocated again to Columbus, Ohio, where Dr. Coffman set up his dentistry practice, and the family lived at 694 Bedford Avenue.

The newspaper reported that Mary spent a weekend visit with her mother, Cornelia, on May 20-21, 1939. Her father, Orlando, had already passed away by then. On March 8, 1946, Mary lost her mother and was placed as the executor of her $4,500 estate. Once the estate was appraised by Elmer Miller, William Metzger, and Gobleib Metzger, the inventory filed in the court listed the total value as $5,569 ($88,625.92 in 2024 dollars). On Saturday, June 5, 1955, the Carroll High School Alumni Association held a banquet to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Mary’s class of 1904, as well as 1887 (the first year of the school), and 1905. Although she spent the majority of her life outside of Fairfield County, she and her husband remained buried, spending their death in the Carroll cemetery. They lie next to their daughter and Clarence’s parents.
