QUICK HISTORY

FAIRFIELD COUNTY – Here at The Far-Land Legacy, we don’t think so. Fairfield County officially became established on December 9, 1800, just twenty-nine days after Lancaster was established on November 10. We want to take this year and reflect on the rich history of Fairfield County leading up to the Quasquibicentennial. After all we tend to only celebrate the official days, but what about all the work, blood, sweat, and tears that built up to that day. Why not take time to reflect on what led up to the proclamation during 1800 that many of these pioneers and settlers ventured west to Ohio for a different life. Take a moment to reflect about that time, 225 years ago the pioneers took on the unknown, some for adventure, some for a better life, some out of curiosity. They left their families, tradition, and the homes they knew for so many years.

THE EARLY YEARS

These early years “broke ground” for the county and community we know today through the celebrations, challenges, and collaborations the early citizens persevered through. Ebenezer Zane entered a contract with the United States government and paved the way for settlers to travel over Zane’s Trace. Captain Joseph Hunter made his way during the spring of 1798 and built the first log cabin. Others followed over the next two years, and even after the establishment of the territory. As Governor of the territory, Arthur St. Clair issued the official proclamation and incorporated Fairfield County, named for its fair fields of farm land and landscape, as the eighth county formed within the borders of the Northwest Territory. A little over two years later, Ohio became a state on March 1, 1803 (February 19 – legally).
