THE HISTORY

This cemetery goes by many names. The Fairfield County Auditor’s site refers to it as the Old Catholic Cemetery. FindAGrave refers to it as Phillips, and the cemetery sign calls it the Saint Joseph Rushcreek Cemetery. The cemetery was established in 1853 and closed its plots in 1892. Joseph Phillips and his wife, Mary Ann, sold an acre of land to provide a plot for the building of a church in 1853 at the cemetery’s location. By 1892, the congregation had parted ways, the church was torn down, and the plot left abandoned.
