BIOGRAPHY

LIBERTY TOWNSHIP – Naomi Wiseley was born to Edward and Leah (Tomlinson) Wiseley in the winter of 1829. Although several references show Naomi born on January 5th, with no supporting documentation, her tombstone located in the Bright cemetery, in Liberty Township, clearly indicates her date of death and calculates her age accordingly. The date engraved into her tombstone records February 8, 1899, and her age, when she died, calculated to 70 years, 1 month, and 3 days. This would make her date of birth in February. The calculation reveals that she was born on Thursday, February 5, 1829. Also, several references point to her birth in Bloom Township, without any current evidence to support the claim. However, going by the 1820 and 1830 U.S. Census, the record confirms her father Edward, and the family, resided in Greenfield Township, prior to her birth, on Monday, August 7, 1820. This location carried through to 1830 records and to when she was recorded living there at 21 years old in 1850 on September 24, recorded by John Reese “J. R.” Mumaugh.

Naomi married John Rauch in Fairfield County on Thursday, October 31, 1850, and they shared a marriage of 44 years, 5 months, and 8 days before John passed away on Monday, April 8, 1895. Neither one made it to live into the twentieth century. As John was originally from Liberty Township, he and Naomi settled there sometime between their marriage and the following U.S. Census in 1860. However, a strong indication reveals that they may have settled in Liberty right after they were married, as their first born, Louisa, was reported to have been born in Liberty Township on August 29, 1851. By June 3, 1870, Naomi took care of the home and children. By this time, she and John had seven children ranging from one to eighteen. Her eighteen-year-old, Louisa helped her with the household work while Andrew, Jeremiah, Oliver, Alice, and Mary attended the local school. Charles, the one-year-old, remained at home in Naomi and Louisa’s care. A farm laborer, Franklin Langle, also lived with the family to assist John with the demanding farm work. By June, 1880, John battled rheumatism while keeping up with his farm work and Naomi, maintaining the house, battled neuralgia. Their three sons, Andrew, Jerry, and Perry all stayed on into their adult lives to work the farm. Perry eventually moved away to Texas, and Alice, Ida, and Charles continued to help out around the house. Charles was eleven by this time.
