BIOGRAPHY

LIBERTY TOWNSHIP – Union Civil War soldier, Private Levi S. Lewis, originated in Liberty Township when he was born on Saturday, August 20, 1825, to David and Lydia (Swartz) Wolf. Levi’s middle initial “S” possibly stands for “Swartz,” as many children were given their mother’s maiden name for their middle name. Levi was the oldest of ten children born to David and Lydia. One passed away, however, before the 1850 U.S. Census. Around Levi’s 25th birthday his family had relocated to Marion Township, Ohio, located in Hancock County, where he remained at home with his parents and his eight younger siblings working as a blacksmith.

Levi married Maryland native, Mary Ann Davis, whose family relocated to Marion Township prior to 1840. After their marriage, on Thursday, August 14, 1851, the couple had four children: Margaret Jane, Lydia, Fannie, and John W. who was born just over a month before the Civil War began. By 35 years old, Levi and Mary had accumulated $2,000 worth of real estate in Findlay with a personal estate value of $1,800 (In April 2024, this equates to $74,777.35 and $67,299.61).

Levi left his family behind as he enlisted in the United States Army to fight for the Union in the Civil War. Enlisted and mustered in on Wednesday, November 6, 1861, he ranked in as a Private in the service of Company H, 57th Ohio Infantry. Only able to serve for a few days shy of 8 months, Levi was captured as a prisoner of war by the Confederates, however died on Thursday, July 3, 1862, from another enemy: disease. Typhoid fever took Levi from this world at only 36 years old, leaving Mary a widow and his children fatherless. J. Soards & Son were the undertakers who received the body and made the necessary burial arrangements. His body was buried in the Cemetery of Spring Grove, in Cincinnati, Ohio, while a memorial stands proudly placed in the Davis cemetery in Hancock County, Ohio, next to his wife. The memorial was possibly erected to keep his memory and legacy with the family so they could properly grieve.
