BIOGRAPHY

CLEARCREEK TOWNSHIP – Born Sunday, April 2, 1775, in Christiana Hundred, Delaware, John Ludwig Augustus was born to German immigrant, Johann Ludwig, and Susanna Elizabeth (Springer) Augustus. Born and raised in Christiana Hundred, John also got married there to Hannah Hendrickson on Wednesday, November 21, 1798, before relocating to Fairfield County, Ohio shortly thereafter. Together they had and raised seven children between living in Delaware, making their journey to Ohio, and while making their new home in Clearcreek Township. They were David, John III, Elizabeth, Mary, Rebecca, Sarah, and Hannah. They lived in Fairfield County by 1806, as John received his land patent and showed recorded on the county tax list. Earning a reputation with the local community, the citizens elected John on Monday, April 5, 1813, just after his thirty-eighth birthday, to serve as the first Treasurer of the newly formed township of Clearcreek. Six months later, on Tuesday, October 12, 1813, the community also elected him as county commissioner, along with Michael Garaghty. Soon, thereafter, he rose to occupy the bench on the court of Common Pleas where he served two terms as the Associate Judge between 1825 and 1830. He also served in other various capacities as needed throughout the community. In 1822, Frederick Dash transferred his property in Section 30 to the Judge.

At 72 years old, Honorable Judge Augustus passed away peacefully on Friday, June 11, 1847, at his residence in Clearcreek Township, where he took part in the early settlement of the area. He and Hannah were married 48 1/2 years. The Lancaster Gazette published his obituary on Friday, July 9, 1847, and highlighted his leadership and contribution as an “honest and useful citizen” and “good neighbor and devoted friend” to settling Clearcreek Township. He ensured that new settlers settled in appropriately while he maintained to improve Fairfield County and the community held his character in high esteem. His body was buried and remains in the Augustus Cemetery on Pine Grove Road SW. Upon his death, his oldest son, David, was named executor of the late Judge’s estate, dated Friday, August 20, 1847.

BURIAL

AUGUSTUS CEMETERY – Judge John Ludwig Augustus II remains buried in the old Augustus cemetery with his wife, Hannah. The cemetery lies on Pine Grove Road SW and remains abandoned as it remains consumed by the landscape around it. All cemetery photos courtesy of Find A Grave.
