Harlow worked as the bookkeeper at a local wholesale grocery store, and when the United States reached out across the Atlantic for their involvement in the Great War, the brown eyed and brown haired Harlow registered for the draft at thirty-eight years old. At the time of his registration he worked as a bookkeeper and he and Sadie lived at 546 South Champion Avenue in Columbus. There they raised their two daughters, Shirley Alma, born on September 1, 1912 and Josephine Virginia, born on August 21, 1915. The following year, Harlow lost his father on Friday, December 22, 1916, and over a decade later, he lost his mother, Minnie, to Myocarditis, an inflammation of the heart muscle, on Friday, May 20, 1927. By 1929, Harlow worked as a salesman at J. J. MacKinnon, a local grocery store. When the second World War occurred, Harlow registered for the draft at 61 years old. Although Harlow Courtright registered for both World War drafts he never served. By this time he and Sadie lived at 770 Bulen Avenue in Columbus where he later died after battling a lengthy illness Sunday morning, December 21, 1947, the day before the anniversary of his father’s death in 1916. He left his wife, Sadie, a widow and his two daughters behind. His funeral was held on Wednesday, December 24, Christmas Eve, at 1 p.m. at the A. J. Held Funeral Home located at 1058 South Parsons Avenue in Columbus. The Lancaster Eagle-Gazette published his obituary on Monday, December 22, 1947.
