BIOGRAPHY

PLEASANT TOWNSHIP – Born the seventh of eight children to Dr. Samuel Sherman and Cecelia R. (Pechin) Dollison, Frances Helena Dollison became part of the family on Thursday, June 13, 1872. After born in McArthur, Ohio, her family relocated to Roseville in Muskingum County, Ohio. During her younger years her family called her by her nickname, Fannie, recorded in the 1880 U.S. Census. Frances later married James A. Irick, from Pleasantville, in 1892, at twenty years old, and together started their life in Pleasant Township. On Sunday, February 12, 1893, James and Frances had a daughter, Jennie May Irick, who unfortunately passed away shortly after her nineteenth birthday, on Sunday, March 10, 1912. During the earlier years Frances worked as a music teacher and led the Pleasantville WCTU as the Vice President. In addition to hosting several of the WCTU meetings, she also attended the Mills Memorial Evangelical United Brethren Church (E.U.B.) as a proud member.

The church operated an additional establishment known as the Otterbein Home. Located in Lebanan, Ohio, the 1,400-acre farm served children and elderly citizens with provisions of vegetables and dairy products, provided chickens and eggs, and offered meals where members could enjoy each other’s company.

After about 45 years of marriage, James passed away on Sunday, June 26, 1938, and the estate he left behind appointed Frances to serve as the executrix. With the petition filed almost three weeks later on Friday, July 15th, Frances gained the approval as executrix of the estate a week later on July 22nd and oversaw his $4,744 estate (equivalent to $105,705.40 in today’s dollars).

By the 1940s, a little over a decade before her death, Frances transferred her membership to the Otterbein Home where she ranked as one of the 98 elderly members. A group from the Mills Memorial E.U.B. Church traveled to the Otterbein Home during the late summer of 1953 and paid a visit to its members, including Frances. Two years later, Mrs. Frances Irick passed away on Monday, August 22, 1955, in the hospital of the Otterbein Home at 83 years old.* Reverend E. S. Comrey, who pastored at the Otterbein Home, officiated her funeral service along with Reverend T. R. Dennis, the pastor of the Mills Memorial E.U.B. Church. The service welcomed those to pay their respects on Thursday, August 25, 1955, at 2 p.m. at the E.U.B. Church where she attended as a member in Pleasantville for the majority of her life.

*Note: Frances Dollison’s obituary stated her age as 85 years old, however the calculation of her age records she had turned 83.
