BIOGRAPHY

LANCASTER – Born to George Ephraim and Ida Bell (Waits) Conrad, Clarence Joe Conrad was eighth in a line of nine children as he joined the family shortly after the turn of the century, on Friday, February 1, 1901. After working the farm and building the family, George relocated his family to Walnut Township in Pickaway County, Ohio where they lived on Walnut Creek Road. Clarence attended the local schools and completed the eighth grade. By the time Clarence turned 19, he moved to Monroe Township, within the same county, and lived with his older sister, Blanche, and her husband, Myrl Clevenger. While living there he worked as a laborer in the local shoe factory. The following year, Clarence traveled to Newport, Kentucky, where he married Opal Florence Huber on Friday, January 28, 1921.

A divorce may have occurred between the two in the years that followed as Clarence married a second time on Tuesday, January 7, 1930, in Lancaster, Ohio to a local widow, Josephine May Culp. Reverend M. V. B. Stump united the two in holy matrimony. Josie had four children previously with her late husband, Myrle Vernon Miller, who lived with them as Clarence’s step children. They were Vernon Howard, Irene Mae, Mary Ruth (who went by her middle name), and Florence Marie. As the couple settled into their new routine, they found a house and rented at their new residence at 840 East Fair Avenue in Lancaster, a close commute for Clarence since he worked at Anchor Hocking. By 1940, Clarence still worked for Anchor Hocking and made an annual income of $1,200. (When converted to 2024’s dollars that equates to $26,599.37). The family relocated to 110 Zane Avenue. Clarence registered for the draft of World War II on February 14, 1942, and reported he was still working at Anchor Hocking, however now lived at 129 South Zane Avenue. By 1950, a record indicated that Clarence worked at this point as a helper in the furnace room. When 1957 rolled around Clarence lost several family members. His sister, Florence Bessie Conrad died on March 10, 1957. Less than a year later, his wife, Josie, passed away on February 24, 1958, and within that same year he lost his brother Harry Arthur. His older sister, Blanche, also passed away on July 16, 1963. Clarence Joe Conrad passed away in Byesville in Guernsey County, on Saturday, June 4, 1977, at the age of 76. He had moved there after his wife’s death. He was buried next to his wife in the Greenfield Cemetery in Carroll.
