BIOGRAPHY

AMANDA TOWNSHIP – Amos Welsh was born on Thursday, November 25, 1802, to Jacob and Mary (Steen) in Berkeley County, Virginia. After growing up in Virginia, he then relocated to Fairfield County where he met and married Louisa Kemp. Reverend Jesse Spurgeon led the couple in marriage on Thursday, January 19, 1826. Amos operated a successful farm as the value increased to $5,500 on September 30, 1850, during the year’s U.S. Census record (equating to $221,091.54 when converted to 2024 dollars). During the summer of 1855, Amos, along with his neighbors, were notified of a petition being presented before the Board of Commissioners of Fairfield County in relation to the road leading from Rock Mill to the intersection of Lancaster and Royalton roads. The notice ran in the Lancaster Gazette from July through September.

Over the next decade, from the previous census record, the 1860 U.S. Census recorded Amos Welsh’s estate at $10,000 ($377,768.67 in 2024 dollars). His personal estate added an additional $1,400 ($52,887.61 in 2024 dollars). During the autumn of 1863, Amos advertised a public sale on Friday, November 20, 1863 at 9:00 a.m. with various livestock, farm equipment, and household appliances. He was listed with providing $0.50 worth of provisions to the soldiers as listed along with other residents of Amanda Township.

SECOND MARRIAGE

After his wife, Louisa, passed away on Saturday, November 12, 1864, he married Malinda Hunter two years later in the First Presbyterian Church, in Lancaster, on Monday, November 5, 1866.

TAVERN STAND FOR SALE

Amos advertised the sale of a tavern stand in Royalton that started on January 31, 1867. Three years later, the 1870 U.S. Census made its rounds and recorded the estate of Amos Welsh’s farm accumulated to a value of $11,100 ($265,678.08 in 2024 dollars) and his personal estate valued an additional $1,000 ($23,934.96 in 2024 dollars).

FOOD PRICE TO COMPARE

The Lancaster Gazette published an article on Thursday, April 28, 1870, which displayed the rising cost of food. The article conveyed disappointment, “There is something radically wrong in our agricultural and domestic relations. When the fact exists that we cannot live comfortably and keep out of debt when wheat is 50 or 60 cents per bushel, and oats and corn about the same, and potatoes from 75 cents to $1.00 with all our improvements and labor-saving machinery, etc., etc., [sic] there must be some deep, underlying wrong. I can go back over an experience of more than 40 years and remember well for many years that oats were seldom worth more than from 15 to 25 cents, and no ready or certain sale at that; corn would sell now and then a few bushels and at a low price without any certain market; wheat ranging at about 50 to 60 cents; pork from $2 to $3, and no extensive market at that; but with all these prices we got along, kept out of debt, and laid up money.” The article continued, but to compare the estate value, 50 cents equates to $11.97 in 2024 dollars; 75 cents to $17.95; and $1 to $23.93.

A LEGACY LEFT

Amos Welsh passed away on Tuesday, March 1, 1881, at 78 years old and laid to rest in the Wesley Church Cemetery located off of Rockmill Road NW.
